Please sign up for overnight trips early—before the sign up dates (most trips have specified cancellation
dates by the rental agency, after which there is a loss of a large deposit) to ensure that the trip will
have enough people to cover the costs. If you want to sign up after the sign up date, rooms may still be
available so please call the leader.

Note:
Make checks out to Oregon
Nordic Club (ONC)–Portland Chapter, not the tour leader.
To sign up for a trip you need
to fill out an ONC overnight trip application and send it to the trip leader
(contact them for their address).
Non-members:
Join our club before signing up
for our overnight trips; send your ONC membership application and membership
fee to ONC’s P.O. Box noted on that form (not to
the trip leader). Thanks!

Annual Fourth of July Camping Holiday
San Juan Islands, WA
Let’s continue an ONC tradition—bike the San Juan Islands in Washington state
on July 4th weekend. Explore these magical islands—on San Juan, we’ll visit
English Camp and American Camp in the National Historical Park, savor the
fragrance at the lavender farm, and watch the orcas at San Juan County Park; on
Lopez—spy on the seals at Shark Reef Sanctuary, and beach comb at Spencer Spit;
on Orcas—intrepid cyclists can take the challenging ride up Mt. Constitution,
or more recreational cyclists can enjoy a shorter ride to the charming town of Eastsound and the local pottery galleries. Keep your eyes
out for the camel on San Juan Island as you ride to the campground! On the
Fourth, we can take in the Fourth of July parade in Friday Harbor and later,
the fireworks display at Roche Harbor.
We’ll carpool to
Anacortes, WA, leave most of our cars (at least two cars will carry the gear),
and take the ferry to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. Upon arriving, we’ll
bike about five miles to Lakedale Campground, and
stay for four nights. We can cook at our campground or go into town for dinner;
plan on a few potluck dinners. The striking of the colors and fireworks at
Roche Harbor are quite a dramatic way to celebrate the 4th. We can make several
rides on San Juan Island and go to Lopez or Orcas islands for more riding. This
trip will be easygoing, enjoying the weekend without our car. A meeting to
organize carpools and potlucks will be held in June. Stay tuned!
Trip Limit: 25 participants.
Cost: $92 per member. ONC
membership required. Includes four nights camping. Extra costs not covered:
parking at Anacortes ($40 per car for those not carrying gear), carpooling,
ferry passage for you and your bike ($30.55 new peak season charge), and food.

Silver Falls State Park Family Fun Weekend
All ONC members are welcome to
join ONC families for a weekend at Oregon’s largest
state park during the annual “Historic Silver Falls Days” weekend. If you’ve
never been to Silver Falls, you’re in for a real treat!
We’ll stay at the amazing, huge, airy “New Ranch” group
lodge. The New Ranch has indoor bathrooms, a huge commercial kitchen, huge group
gathering area around large indoor fire pit in the great room, large grassy
meadow for outdoor games, etc.
The annual “Historic Silver Falls Days” activities include
living history demonstrations, old fashioned games, an old fashioned car show
and toy boat races. There are hikes for all ages and abilities including a
short, easy hike behind the voluminous South Falls for younger kids or the 7
mile Trail of Ten Falls for older kids. Other possible activities: swim in the
river, ride bikes, make nature journals, tie-dye t-shirts, learn basic map
& compass skills and, of course, make new friends! Meals will be potluck
with details to follow. Chris and Judy Beaudette have
volunteered to act as our “cruise directors” for the weekend.
NOTE: We need one or two more volunteers to coordinate
the potluck meals--contact Amy if you can help.
Trip Limit: Minimum of 15 and maximum of 20
participants.
Cost: $30 per adult, $20 per child (16 and younger);
$100 maximum per family. ONC membership required.
Includes 2 nights’ bunk-style lodging and activities. Meals will be pre-planned
potluck with each family asked to bring specific items. IMPORTANT: Please
include the name and ages of any children as well as whether any participants
are vegetarians.

July 28–31, Wed–Sat, Advanced Backpack
Loowit Trail, Mt. St. Helens, WA
Join me on a backpack around Mt. St. Helens. The Loowit trail goes through parts of the recovery zone,
wooded sections, high meadows, boulder fields and the Plains of Abraham (pumice
plain). We’ll start at either the June Lake trailhead or the Red Rock Pass
trailhead. The total trip is about 29 miles with about 10 miles per day. The
trail ranges from 3,400 ft. to 4,800 ft. in elevation. We’ll probably have to
bypass a small section of the Loowit trail and go
thru the Blue Lake trails to get to our first camp at South Toutle
River.
Trip Limit: 11 members plus the leader.
Cost: no charge for members (ONC
member membership required: $27 single or $33 family). Carpool costs and food
not included.

Yellowstone
National Park Dream Ski Trip
You have been there in the summer with all the tourists.
You have heard about it from others who have been there in the winter. Now it
is YOUR opportunity to experience the dream: YELLOWSTONE IN WINTER! Twenty
lucky people will have the opportunity of a lifetime next ski season. To make
it possible for those who spend the holidays with their families and to take
advantage of better snow conditions, weather, and longer days, for 2011 we’ll
be conducting the trip in February, 2011—the next ski season. Besides our usual
trip to Mammoth Hot Springs and Old Faithful, we will be adding an optional
trip to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River as a day tour from Mammoth
Hot Springs. The reports from people who have done this are that it is
magnificent.
Put the dates on your calendar for next year. Tell your
boss that you will be gone that week! Save your Euros! Wax your skis! Prepare
for a wonderful trip!
