List Server

Let's Communicate Between Newsletters and have the Latest Updates for Skiing
by Russ Pascoe, Nordic Club list server manager
The Nordic Club has started a list server on Yahoo so members can announce last minute trips and changes to trips previously publicized in the newsletter. Here is how the list server works:
  1. Any interested Nordic Club member signs on to the list.
  2. Any member on this list can then message all others on the list by sending one email.
  3. All members on the list must be Oregon Nordic Club members.

There are several key features of this list server:

  • Signup is voluntary. If you don't sign up, you won't get the benefits of the list.
  • You can contact everyone who has signed up by sending an e-mail to OregonNordicClub (at) yahoogroups.com
  • All emails are kept on the website and you can search them to find useful information from previous conversations.
  • If you prefer, you can send messages from the yahoo groups website instead of using your email.
  • You can share photos and post trips and upcoming events on a calendar.
  • You can receive the information three in different ways.
    • Each individual message can be sent to you by e-mail immediately.
    • Each day's messages can be sent to you in one e-mail; this is called a “daily digest.” This reduces the volume of e-mail sent to you but introduces a delay.
    • You can view messages on the website, indicated by choosing “web only” when you sign up. This means that you must go to the website to view messages and that you won't get any e-mail from the lister server.

For several years now, I have been a member of several groups with list servers. About 4 years ago my whitewater paddling club, the Lower Columbia Canoe Club, started one. Whitewater, like snow, is hard to predict and we use it to get our trips to the best places at the safest times. Trip reports warn of hazards. The club has a newsletter like Oregon Nordic Club's but many times the publicized trips get changed or trips get added. To communicate these changes, we use the Yahoo list server. There are 158 out of the 200 Lower Columbia Canoe Club members using the list server. Most members who paddle in the club rely on it. Since the Nordic Club experiences the similar challenges in change of trips (due to weather, conditions, etc.), the use of a list server will be an easy way to connect with members about changes in plans or new ski trips.

If interested, please sign up for the list server in one of the following two ways.

  1. Send an e-mail to Jack Whitney, asking him to add you to the list. Jack will check the club roster to verify that you are a member and then send you an invitation to join the service, just follow its directions.
