What to Wear
Nordic Skiing is an Aerobic Activity
Nordic skiing is an aerobic activity so even on the coldest days you will generate heat. Start with a light breathable layer of non-restrictive poly-thermal long underwear, add layers of synthetics (or wool, not cotton), a wind layer and don't forget warm socks, gloves and a light hat or headband. Carry water, snacks, sunglasses and sunscreen.
In the Pacific Northwest, be prepared for changing weather conditions. Adding and removing clothing layers are routine so carry a small backpack for storing extra clothing.
Some Rules
These rules apply to most outdoors activities and especially to Nordic skiing:
- Dress in layers
- Avoid cotton for aerobic activities - especially in cold weather
Never wear jeans! Denim, a cotton material, is absolutely the worst material you can wear while skiing. Denim doesn't breath, it's heavy, and it's stiff. ONC trip leaders may deny you the privilege of joining the group activity if you show up dressed in jeans for a skiing event.
