The Photo-Sharing Web site
The opening page shows a box for each album and a locator map on the right with ‘push pins’ locating the activity. Each album has a title, the number of photos, date, and a tiny yellow map with a red pin if there is a locator map.
Open an album by double-clicking on it. On the left is the album description, a button to download the complete album at the original size, and a locator map. Each photo is shown as a thumbnail. In the upper right you can select the size of the thumbnail. To view the photos, click the slideshow button at the top or double-click any photo. Captions can be shown or hidden. By choosing the single photo method you can download a single photo or manually move through the album photos. You can order prints or download the photos you want and print your own.
Guide for taking and preparing photos
When taking photos of ONC trips think about what is interesting for those on the trip and those who may want to do the trip in the future. A good size for submitting photos is 1024 x 768. Try not to submit photos larger than 1600 x 1200. The file size gets too large very quickly. These sizes will make acceptable prints to about 5 x 7 inches and fill many computer monitors if downloaded. If your original photo is larger, please resize it. You should save it in JPG format, becasue the photos site accepts only JPGs.
Google has a free photo handling and editing program available that is very easy to use. It will resize, crop, and fix most photos of common problems like being too dark or light. It is called Picasa and is available at picasa.google.com; Picasa was Windows only, but a Linux version is now available. Mac users can organize, resize and export photos with iPhoto, which came with your Mac. You can also resize photos free on-line at shrinkpictures.com and many other places.
Getting your Photos Posted
Select ten to fifteen photos per trip, and send them in an e-mail to Terry Owen. Include the trip description, an accurate location so he can make a locator map, and a list of captions keyed to each photo. Please leave the original number attached to the photo. This will give the order in which the photos were takenthe order can get scrambled when uploading!
E-mail the photos as attachments; please limit the attachments to about 2 MB per e-mail, and use multiple e-mails as needed. Photos from the old Yahoo photo site are being moved to the Picasa site. The goal of the site is to give viewers a feeling for the areaso that they can tell if the trip would be of interest to them. If a GPS route map and elevation profile is available, it will have been included. The map and profile give an indication of the difficulty of the trip.
