  • Kalama Ski Trail-Mount St. Helens MGreenstreet May 5 2011 (All day)

Cinco de Mayo seemed a good date to try El Kalama Ski Trail. Steve Bachhuber and I wanted to scout the trail for problems that could be corrected this summer. So although it was a wet day in Portland we drove to the Cougar Sno Park where we found about 18 inches of snow. Snow depth increased rapidly and by the time we were on the trail at FS 830 snow depth was six feet and probably got up to 8 feet. Skiing was excellent, snow is clean, slightly soft, but very fast. We were able to identify several areas where the trail changed directions without adeaquate signs and we will return in Julio for some well needed trail work. This trail right now offers outstanding opportunity for spring skiing and I will be leading a tour up there as soon as the sun appears.

  • Crazy Hills Advanced Ski Tour-April 9, 2011 MGreenstreet Apr 9 2011 (All day)

Seven skiers, armed with a sense of optimism, headed into the Crazy Hills, hoping to find a path to the top of Big Skookum.  Success achieved, but finding a way down proved challenging.  True to the promise of a "Crazy Hills Experience", a feeling of being slightly lost enveloped the group. Alls well that ends well is a good saying under any circumstance, and soon we were climbing Hidden Valley Pass and headed back to the barn.  All participating skiers are now members of the Royal Order of the Skookum.  Congratulations.

There is plenty of snow in the Crazy Hills and at Lone Butte sno park in general. Many more weeks of spring skiing await, now just wish for sunshine.

  • Right Canyon Tour, Mt. St. Helens srbachhuber Mar 20 2011 (All day)

6 intrepid skiers set out from Cougar sno-park at 2,200' on Mt. St. Helens sunday morning under thickening cloudy skies.  We climbed the Kalama ski trail north and west toward Red Rock Pass.  The snow was soft, wet and heavy mashed potato snow, that was not too difficult to break and set track, but relatively slow.  Route finding along the Kalama trail is difficult beyond the climber's bivouac road because the blue diamonds are missing or broken- a repair project for next summer. As we neared Red Rock, we turned up Right Canyon and climbed to 3,800' among light falling snow.  Our descent was through forest opened by a 1980 mudflow just east of the canyon, where some slopes were open enough to carve a few turns.  We returned along our set track on the Kalama trail, and the snow turned to rain during the last mile of our trip.  Overall we climbed 1,600' and covered about 9 miles round trip.

  • Upper Wind River Report MGreenstreet Mar 6 2011 (All day)

Eight skiers ventured forth to ski the Pete Gulch trail on Sunday. Upper Wind River road has been plowed in a very expert fashion by Skamania County, just a few patches of wet snow remaining.  Snowpack condtions were as peculiar as I have seen. Two inches of hard rain crust over 18 inches of sugar snow, very light airy snow that collapsed with a faint pole plant.  The crust was firm enough most of the time that we did not break through, but avoiding pole plants was the secret. We skied about 10.5 miles round trip.  Temperature was 40 degrees, no wind, trail conditions were mixed with much compaction under trees on the lower trail but increasingly good condtions as we climbed. We surprised one elk two miles up the trail and had to wait for it to clear out before proceeding, and on the way back to Carson enjoyed watching a herd of almost 40 elk grazing in a meadow.

    Teacup Lake, Oregon -
    Mar 2, 2011

Thirteen skiers decided groomed trails would be more fun than breaking trail in very deep and not so light snow. Snow showers came down much of the day and at times very heavy. Temperature was near freezing. Skiers were Judd, Karl, Pam, Stephany, Eileen, Mary, Ben, Linda, Barbara, Howard, Bob, Kathy, and Terry. Trip leader was Terry Owen. • Mt St Helens terryowen Feb 16 2011 (All day)

Mt St Helens Ski Wednesday, Feb 16.

Six people skied together at Mt St Helens from the Marble Mtn Snow Park.  At least a foot of heavy new snow greeted us at the Snow Park.  We skied toward Marble Mtn only to discover that the bridge no longer exist so we returned to the Marble loop and made our way to back to Road 83, which had been tracked by two snowmobiles (the only ones we saw or heard Wed) and skied up to June Lake, which was lovely - trees sheathed in heavy snow everywhere.  There was probably about one and a half feet of new snow at June Lake.

With continued snow there should be plenty of snow for some great skiing now on Mt St Helens.

  • Pete Gulch Trail, Upper Wind River MGreenstreet Jan 9 2011 (All day)

Seventeen ONC skiers skied the Pete Gulch trail up to FS 65.  Trail conditions were very good, about 4 inches of new snow over rain crust. Weather was sun breaks and snow showers. Great skiing day overall and  the new Overlook trail is a welcome addition to the McClellan Meadows trail system.

    2011 John Day Race Start

New Snow! 2 feet over the past week! Photo by Stef

The John Day Memorial Citizen’s Cross Country Ski Race places an emphasis on “Citizen’s”. Former Olympic team skiers have participated in past races and we expect very competitive skiers. However, no race experience is needed and the wide course and friendly competition has room for all levels of skiers.

The race course is machine groomed for skating and track set for classic skiing. The course is relatively flat with gentle rolling terrain and views if a racer chooses to look up. All race events are held on the same course, with longer events accomplished with more laps of the 5K loop. The race uses a mass start with classic event skiers just behind the freestyle skiers.

The 5300 foot elevation is high enough for good snow with air still “thick” enough for comfortable breathing at race pace.

Correction to 2009 John Day Race Results (2-25-2010). We upload a revised 2009 John Day Race Results sheet on 2-26-2010. The corrected race results shows the correct time for Eric Martin (First Place Men’s 20K Freestyle). Our timing official reconstructed the 2009 results table using the data from the manual timing sheets. We believe that the previously incorrect posted time was due to an incorrectly written bib number during the race. Eric Martin's time for 2009 (0:49:48) is essentially identical to his 2010 time (0:49:49). Our apologies to all.

JOHN DAY -- SKIER, OUTDOORSMAN, MOUNTAIN CLIMBER AND BICYCLIST

Cross-country skiing would not be as popular in Oregon as it is today were it not for a Medford man named John Day. Like a modern day Johnny Appleseed, Day drove around the state, towing a snowmobile, setting tracks for people who wanted to ski cross country.

John spent much of his youth in Southern Oregon. He graduated from Medford High School. He and his wife Nan lived in Sams Valley, where he ranched, developed real estate and raised buffalo. He was an all-around outdoorsman, a bicyclist (he held several age group records), a mountain climber (he climbed four peaks in a 24 hour span in Oregon) and climbed Mt. McKinley in Alaska, and a big game hunter (listed several times in Boone & Crockett Club Record Books).

Day became interested in cross-country skiing after leg injury made it impossible for him to run anymore (he ran in local road races). He spent a winter in Norway learning to race and tried out for the 1964 Olympic Cross Country Ski Team. He was chosen as a alternate, but was not called upon to race with the U.S. Team. Day then spent the next few years promoting skiing for the United States Ski Association. In that position, he traveled throughout Oregon promoting cross-country skiing. Whenever a local club wanted to hold a race, John would lay the tracks and then race himself. During that period, he, along with Bill Pruitt and Dan Bulkley, formed the Oregon Nordic Club, an organization that now comprises hundreds of skiers in chapters throughout Oregon.

John Day died in 1986. Because of his extraordinary contribution to cross country skiing, the Southern Oregon Chapter of the Oregon Nordic Club organized and dedicated an annual ski race in his honor. Started in 1987, the Oregon Nordic Club has held the John Day Memorial race each February at Diamond Lake Resort.

  • Crazy Hills Ski Tour, Saturday February 19 MGreenstreet Feb 19 2011 (All day)

Ten skiers entered the Crazy Hills with some trepidation and with good reason. An area with such locations such as Loco Pass, Big Skookum, and the Crazy Hills commands respect. We were greeted with fresh friendly snow and stellar blue skies. Snow depth at Lone Butte Sno Park was maybe eighteen inches but at the 3500 foot level it was more than three feet with prominent tree wells on the beaver marsh trail which were explored in depth by some of our group.  With the return of winter I hope to lead two more tours into this area in the next month.

  • White River Southeast LDeKay Jan 22 2011 - 12:00pm

Shelley & Fred @ White River SEIt was a really great day. Shelley Baxter, Fred Stewart and Lloyd DeKay met at 11:00 and headed up the mountain. We weren't sure what to expect but we knew Teacup would be a zoo... and it was, so we kept going.

Drainage CrossingWe pulled into the parking lot at White River West (East is closed by a snow berm) and half of Portland was there. But the snow was firm and soft, not boilerplate, so we headed out across the road to the southeast side. That area is generally open with broad gentle slopes paralleling the river. The snow was fast and wet; fairly easy to control with plow turns when necessary. All that's left of lots of very old snowmobile tracks now are long low ridges that occasionally caught a ski, but with the soft firm snow it was painless to fall and easy to get up.

On the trailWe did quite a bit of zigzagging in places into and through the woods and across minor buried drainages that would have been tough to backtrack, but we didn't need to do that in the end. We were out about 3+ hours and probably covered 4-5 miles with all the backtracks for dead ends, thick groves, and stream-cut gullies. But we didn't see another person the whole time we were out. The day was bright and sunny with that stunning view of Mt Hood. It was pretty much Spring skiing with about 1/2" of track depth in soft to corn snow.

StupendousSo not ideal powder but probably the best skiing available around here right now. I'd recommend it to anyone. The only minor fault was that it's all uphill heading back out and the skis didn't grab in the wet snow all that well, but hey, you've gotta go uphill sometime unless you're riding lifts on crowded downhill slopes.
