WALTON SKI TRAILS
The Walton Sno-Park is located about nine miles northeast of Ochoco Ranger Station on Forest Road 22. This is on the Big Summit District of the Ochoco National Forest. Traction tires or chains are recommended as the last few miles are steep, narrow, and not sanded.
There are about 20 miles of marked ski trails originating from the Sno-Park. Trails are marked with blue diamonds and there are map boards at each trail junction. Junctions are labeled with a letter from "A" through "J". Open areas are marked with blue stakes or with white stakes with blue diamonds. All trails are accessed from the Sno-Park. Length of each trail is shown along with the elevation of the highest and lowest point on the trail.
The trails are marked and maintained by the Ochoco Chapter of the Oregon Nordic Club. For current trail information contact the club (541) 447-5505 or e-mail to skiandsew@coinet.com. or check the Web page.

"J". This trail continues east another 2.0 miles and ends at a viewpoint on the west side of Slide Mtn The last mile of this trail is more difficult due to the steepness. LAKE TRAIL Easy 2.0 miles
5160-5420 feet elevation
This trail starts at Jct "C" and goes south through open meadow and large pine to Walton Lake It then continues west and north to reconnect with Corral Loop at Jct "D". For beginners it is easiest to ski in this direction.

DROPOFF Most Difficult 1.9 miles 5500-5700 feet elevation.
This is best skied from Jct. "G". It follows a road for about the first mile then traverses through a plantation. The most difficult section is near Jct. "J" where it climbs a 60% slope which is usually walked or side stepped.
HIGH RIM More Difficult 1.8 miles 5550-5900 feet elevation.
This leaves Corral Loop at Jct. "H" and goes up a steady 10% grade until it breaks out on an open plateau at the high point. There are excellent views westward 200 yds. west of the marked trail from the high point. The ridge to the south provides an easy telemark slope back to this trail or the Slide Mtn. Trail. Further north on the trail there are good views to the north.
ROUND MTN More Difficult
3.5 miles 5500-5800 feet elevation. This trail starts just west of the shelter at the Sno Park and follows the ridge south toward Round Mtn The trail joins the Walton Lake to Round Mtn. hiking trail at about one mile and follows it to the base of Round Mtn. The marked ski trail ends at a meadow near the base of the mountain. The quickest way to the top, 6753 feet elevation, is to go straight up if you have "skins". Otherwise one can zigzag up the slope. In either case the route is most difficult after it leaves the trail. It is about 0.8 miles to the top and about 1,000 feet of climb.
