The
Origin Myth of Meacham Divide
In the winter of
1996, the low snow conditions at the BMNC ski area, Blue Mountain
Crossing, resulted in a tremendous melancholy throughout the
land..
One morning in late
winter, two skiers, Torbjorn Antell and Odd Axelrod decided
to try skate skiing a little higher up the mountain on the crust.
Not only did they find crust, but they found good snow, and
lots of it, just a few short miles from Blue Mountain Crossing.
As they skied along
logging roads, grizzled Torbjorn turned to Odd and remarked,
"We've gone entirely wrong in our plans, Odd." Soon,
both skiers agreed that this new area should be the focus of
the BMNC's future trail grooming efforts.
And thus, a legend
was born. Torbjorn Antell began the alchemical process for seeking
approval to construct the still nameless ski area, and along
with volunteers, cleared 20 km of trails that next summer. As
the snow began to fly one December Day, Torbjorn and his numerologist,
Vik Brandon, drove KT the Sno-Cat along Loppet Trail for the
first time, and were encountered there by Odd, who photographed
them in the act of packing a corduroy skating lane.
Since then Torbjorn
has retired from running the ski area, as has his successor,
Odd. Meacham Divide is now managed by a Board of Directors that
oversees the many aspects of trying to run a not-for-profit,
free, public ski area.
If you are interested
in becoming a part of the legend....Now's the time to join
the club and volunteer. We'll give you a weird name, too.
