About Oregon Nordic Club
The following is an overview of the Oregon Nordic Club (ONC) compiled in 2006 for the 40th anniversary of the organization.
Describe the history of the organization
The Statewide Oregon Nordic Club organization is proud to announce its 40th anniversary this last Dec. 20th, 2006.
Founding members were: Robert Huff, Medford,OR; William Pruitt, Grants Pass,OR; and J.S. Day, Central Point,OR
The Oregon Nordic Club is a duly registered non-profit 501c3 corporation with the State of Oregon. It follows the same laws and operates like any other non-profit corporation. Oregon Nordic Club Incorporated consists of the general membership of dues paying members. The main responsibility of the general membership to the corporation is to elect the board of directors to carry out the club's business.
Describe the management structure
The board of directors is the decision making body of the club; it elects its own officers and transacts the club business at regular meetings throughout the year. The authority of the board to make decisions is given by the general membership in the act of electing them to the state representative position and through directives formulated at chapter business meetings and at the annual club meeting following the end of the season John Craig Race.
We meet as a board three times a year, in the Fall, Winter, Spring - the John Craig Wilderness event is our end of season celebration. This form of organization was selected in order to legally protect individuals of the club and to provide a useable vehicle for carrying out the interests of a widely spread (geographically) group of people. We have articles of incorporation and By-laws that govern our actions.
Chapter programs
ONC has 12 chapters throughout the state. Several of the chapters host a website and calendar of activities, programs and events as well as newsletters - see examples below.

Three chapters have grooming operations operating on donations and volunteer members.

Tumalo Langlauf Club - www.tumalolanglauf.com
Blue Mountains - http://www.onc.org/bmnordic/meacham-map.htm
The rest of the chapters have organized group tours and overnight outings locally, throughout the state as well as outside the country.
Is there a formal mission
Goals of the organization are to provide a means whereby its members may cooperate in the enjoyment of outdoor recreation.
To promote greater participation in and understanding of the values of outdoor recreation with emphasis on ski touring and other winter sports.
To do anything deemed advisable by the membership or its Board of Directors which may be legally done by an Oregon Nonprofit Corporation.
Highlights in 2006
Each chapter has a list of acheivements and projects that they maintain on an annual basis.
Teacup has a new lodge, which has brought in a larger membership base.
Shelter building in cooperation with USDA Forest Service.
Organized ski tours throughout the state and out of out of country
Fall Trail Maintenance and Shelter Stocking - The Club’s annual Fall trail-maintenance and wood-stocking activities continued this year with work parties on October. The Forest Service, being under funded and under staffed, relies more and more on the kindness of others to maintain trails and shelters.
The Club wishes to thank all the volunteers who contribute their time and muscle power to making our ski trips safe more enjoyable.
John Craig Wilderness Ski Event - http://www.tumalolanglauf.com/events/john_craig_memorial.html
Each year we host the 2nd oldest wilderness ski event in the state, the John Craig Memorial. Members ski McKenzie Pass near Sisters Oregon. This pass is closed in winter and the chapters come together for its end of season celebration.
ONC memberships in other organizations:
PNSA - Pacific Northwest Ski Association.
OEC - Oregon Environmental Council.
ODOT - Oregon Department of Transportation: - we have a rep on the snow-park committee.
Work with other clubs
In Bend there are several xc ski organizations, on occasion there is a meeting of minds, called the Nordic Alliance where we get together and discuss schedules and areas of interest where we can cooperate.
Meissner Snow-park and Mt. Bachelor offer groomed skiing for high school racers, elite skiers such as XC Oregon and Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation.
The other groups we work with are Metro Parks and Recreation as well as the local Community college.
We offer information and instruction, as well as trail maps for all snow ski users to enjoy and provide a low-cost and affordable means for familes and skiers new to the sport to participate in our programs.
There has been some cross over in hiking and biking groups that lead into more members for the winter activity groups.
